How to think about it
Outdoor furniture stopped having to look like outdoor furniture.
For a long time the choice outside was between something that survived the summer and something you actually wanted to look at. That is no longer the trade-off. Rowe and Vanguard build outdoor pieces on the proportions of their indoor ones — the same seat depths, the same arms, performance fabrics that read as upholstery rather than as vinyl — so a covered porch can carry on from the room it opens off.
Brown Jordan came at it from the other end and has been building for the weather since 1945, in cast and extruded aluminium, hand-wrapped rope and woven fibre. Its pieces are sculptural rather than domestic, and they are made to still be there in fifteen years. Neither approach is the correct one. They suit different terraces, and the difference is easiest to feel sitting in them.
Rowe

Rowe’s first indoor-outdoor programme, made with the designer Paul Delaisse and launched this spring. It takes shapes from the indoor line — the same seat depths, the same arms — and rebuilds them in outdoor upholstery, with occasional tables to go alongside. A covered porch furnished from it reads as a room rather than as a patio.

Vanguard
The room, and the terrace off it, from one catalogue.
Vanguard is the only house here that will do both, and nothing it makes is built on a line — every piece is worked at a bench. Outside it uses aluminium, woven fibre, teak and stone, on the proportions of its indoor upholstery, with two hundred and thirty-one of its fabrics rated for the weather and the same finish catalogue running through all of it.

Designing for outside since 1945, and never calling it patio furniture.
Cast and extruded aluminium, warranted fifteen years structurally and the same fifteen against the finish peeling or blistering. Twenty-four frame finishes, yacht-size rope wrapped by hand, Suncloth, Flex Sling and Dekton tops. Sculptural rather than domestic, and built on the assumption that you will still have it in fifteen years.

What makes it last
From the makers' own warrantiesFrames
Cast and extruded aluminium is what Brown Jordan warrants for fifteen years — structurally, and the same fifteen against the finish peeling or blistering. Vanguard’s outdoor frames are aluminium too. It is the material that doesn’t argue with August.
Weaves
A woven piece carries the frame’s fifteen years and three years on the weave itself. Both figures are Brown Jordan’s own, and together they are the honest way to choose between a woven piece and a slung one for a hard west-facing wall.
Fabric
Cushions, slings and umbrellas are warranted five years against colour and strength loss from sun and weather. Vanguard rates two hundred and thirty-one of its fabrics for outdoors. Fabric is what fails first, so it is the number worth asking about.
Teak
Three years structurally against aluminium’s fifteen, by Brown Jordan’s own document. Teak is chosen for how it ages rather than for how long it lasts untouched — left alone it silvers, and it wants oiling if you’d rather it didn’t.
