Pacific Green

The house

Closer to stone than to timber.

Pacific Green traces its design lineage to Sydney in 1973. Its defining material is Palmwood®, made from mature plantation coconut palms after their fruiting life, used alongside steel structures, leather and piece-specific materials such as bronze, wool and linen. Natural variation, visible construction and a surface that develops with use are part of the material proposition.

How it's made

The material

Palm, after it stops fruiting

Coconut palm is harvested at the end of its productive life rather than felled for timber. It is dense and heavy, and the grain reads closer to stone than to wood — flecked rather than lined. No two boards take a finish the same way, which is why the piece on our floor is never quite the piece in a photograph.

The structure

Steel underneath

The palm carries the look; a steel structure carries the load. It is the reason these pieces are heavier than they appear and the reason nothing racks after a decade — and the reason nobody here will describe them as solid palmwood throughout.

The covering

Full-grain hide

Vegetable-tanned, so it patinas rather than peels. The darker hides go glossy at the arms inside a year, which is the point of them. Seats and backs are wrapped rather than upholstered over a frame.

Leathers, hides and shearlings

Forty-three leathers, nine hides, seven shearlings and sheepskins, and two exotics, across four tiers. Hand-painted leathers, brindle and axis-spotted hides, merino and Mongolian wool. Your own leather is accepted, and beyond the book there are bison and antelope on request — ask, and we will find it.
