Upholstery usually gets expensive through choice: hundreds of frames, thousands of fabrics, and a workroom that retools for every order. Apio Furniture works the other way round. Seventeen upholstery frames, around two hundred fabrics, and pieces built in production runs rather than one at a time on a bench.

The range is narrower on purpose, and deeper than it looks — each frame comes as a sofa, a loveseat, a chair, a chaise or a sectional, so a room usually resolves inside it, and the chairs, stools and beds are cut from the same list. Most of it is assembled in Georgia, which is not where this price usually comes from. What you give up is the fabric that exists in one mill's book and nowhere else. What you get is a number that leaves budget for the rooms where you want to spend it.

Pacific Green traces its design lineage to Sydney in 1973. Its defining material is Palmwood®, made from mature plantation coconut palms after their fruiting life, used alongside steel structures, leather and piece-specific materials such as bronze, wool and linen. Natural variation, visible construction and a surface that develops with use are part of the material proposition.

Vanguard has built furniture in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains since 1969, and it is the only house we carry that will furnish a room end to end. Case goods are the depth of the line — chests, consoles, dining tables, beds and occasional pieces — and they carry the same finish catalogue as everything else: around seventy standard stains before you reach raffia, shagreen, parchment, tinted metal and hand-applied striping.

Nothing here is built on a line. Every sofa, chair and table is worked at a bench and hand-finished in America, and the upholstery is eight-way hand-tied — a real distinction, and not every American house still does it.

The outdoor collections take the same proportions outside, on aluminium, woven fibre, teak and stone, with two hundred and thirty-one fabrics rated for the weather. One catalogue, one finish language, one lead time to track: a dining room, the bedroom above it and the terrace off it can come from the same order.
